August Snapshots

Greetings to you! It is a beautiful day in Ghana! If you would have told me in January that we would have days like this one, I wouldn't have believed you! This morning I was hanging up wash and suddenly the thought popped into my head, "I wonder if this is what the weather will be like in Heaven?" I kind of doubt there will be "weather". But a day like today; clear blue skies, warm sunshine, balmy breezes. Well, it's just about as perfect as it gets! The sun got rather warm this afternoon. When I hung my last pieces of wash up just before noon the concrete I was standing on burned the bottoms of my feet a bit. And I remembered those hot January to March days. So I am soaking up every balmy breeze I find! These beautiful breezy days remind me a tad bit of fall back in the US. Now if the leaves would change color, I couldn't ask for more! I guess we will enjoy the flowering trees instead!

August 6 found us spending the day in Accra shopping for parts and groceries before dropping Amy off at the airport.

He shopped till he dropped!

I was a bit worried about how we were going to adjust being on our own again. The things I mind the most is not having someone to go away with. Or on walks. I was afraid the children would get terribly bored, but they have actually done very well. I did start a chore chart, and having some extra responsibilities definitely helps the oldest two not get so bored. The high light of our day in Accra was eating supper on a balcony at a restaurant. It wasn't far from the airport and the airplanes flew in close to us. The children loved it!

                                          Fine burgers and fries!!!

Molly recuperated well from being drove over. Shortly before it happened, she had figured out a way to get under the fence. She never did it, that we know of, except when we wanted to walk somewhere. When they put the chain link up, the last section didn't get a bar along the bottom and she would nose her way underneath. Before she was even walking on all four feet, she was at it again. And then she did it when  we drove away too. We had been considering giving her back to Tom and Galyn since they only had one dog anymore. That settled it and we took her over there. She loves it there. She doesn't get bored like she did here. She was just too much dog for our small family. This past Sunday Lonnie Weavers walked over and brought us one of their pups. We went from a huge dog to a tiny puppy! The children love her! The first two days she cried whenever someone wasn't outside with her but now she has settled in. She does cry when she thinks it has been awhile since someone has played with her but there is usually at least one child willing to go play. She does a pretty good job of being a watch dog already, which is the reason we got her. I want a dog that lets me know when someone is here. It doesn't need to chase them down, just alert me!
Meet Cindy!
There is nothing quite like a boy and a dog!

School started this week. I am homeschooling Kelsey and of course it is all fun and games right now! Everything is review and new and exciting! I hope we can at least try to keep up the momentum! Austin likes to do school books or at least coloring too. He usually doesn't last real long but that is fine. He as two years yet till he starts first grade. We missionaries plan to get together at least once a month for craft/art class of some sort. We will try to make it over to Toms every week for Fante class as well.

On Tuesday we had a candy making day. I had gotten some coating wafers and Galyn had some as well. Mom had sent pretzels over, and we did coconut eggs, peppermint patties, oreo balls, brownie balls, buck eyes, bananas, wafers, peanut butter crackers, nuts, and I don't remember what else! It was a fun American feeling day!

We have had children dropping in wanting to play almost every day, It becomes a problem since I really need to be out there observing. Finally I decided to do an hour and a half twice a week that they can come play and then the rest of the time they aren't allowed in the yard. Word got around and some days we have 30 children come. But I do love it! I know names for people now and I can schedule them into my day. Also, my children can now play outside and people don't show up every time they hear them. Kelsey has met two new friends which is great since our neighbor girl that she played with a lot moved away.
The main attraction is riding scooter.
